Artist's Note
These basalt formations were shaped by lava flows so old that human memory doesn't reach back far enough to have a story about them, and yet there they were, lit only by starlight, looking almost patient. I remember thinking that the rock had been waiting under skies like this for longer than anything I could really picture. I framed the shot low, so the ancient stone and the ancient light would share the same breath of a photograph. It's one of my favourite reminders that some things, rock, light, the slow turn of the galaxy, were never in a hurry to begin with.
